Dr. John R. Jones is a retired university administrator, and now resides in Northampton County, NC, where he was born and completed elementary and secondary education. Presently, he is Program Manager (volunteer) with the Northeastern Economic Empowerment Corporation, a not-for-profit corporation, serving a two county area and is the Vice Chair of the Northampton County Economic Development Commission. In addition, he has extensive involvement with other area not-for-profit corporations as a co-founder, member of the Board of Directors, and Quality Assurance Director.
Dr. Jones’ professional career began as a counselor in a curriculum research program at Tennessee State University. Subsequently he developed a student retention Program at Lincoln University (MO); expanded and enhanced a scholarship for local community citizens and increased funding through grant writing awards at the University of the Pacific; and established a faculty and staff training program and developed an academic scholarship for high achieving students at the University of Missouri. Since those positions, he has been a Vice President of a college, Executive Director of a satellite campus of a university, and the Executive Director of Community Engagement, a cabinet level position, at the University of Central Missouri where he created a university center at Union Station in Kansas City, MO.
During his tenure at Central Missouri, among other outstanding achievements, Dr. Jones was recognized for creating an aviation youth academy for high school students. This intense one-week summer program was designed to introduce the students to careers in aviation, and engage students in obtaining technical skills for flight preparation and piloting aircraft. Students participating in this program were hosted in Washington, DC where they were recognized at the annual convention of the Congressional Black Caucus and presented to professionals in the aviation industry and to the Tuskegee Airmen. This program was the cover page story of the Sunday Magazine of the Kansas City Star and was highlighted in many other publications.
Dr. Jones has received numerous awards for academic leadership and community service. Those include being the honored guest of the Coca Cola Corporation at Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa, Fl.; a commendation from the General Assembly of California, Educator of the Year from the In Roads Program, Inc., Citizen Of the Year, Outstanding Faculty Award, the Caesar E. Chavez Excellence Award and many others. He has presented invited papers at national conferences and has been a speaker and panelist at other conferences.
Dr. Jones received his Bachelor’s Degree from Shaw University and is a Life Member of the National Alumni Association and is the President of the Weldon-Seaboard Alumni Chapter, where he has served since 2007. He received his Master’s Degree from Tennessee State University and is a Millennium Member of the National Alumni Association. He earned his Doctorate from the University of Missouri and is a member of the National Alumni Association. Other memberships include the NAACP, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., AARP, and the Carol Wilson Caldwell Memorial Foundation.
